Dear Sirs:

This is in reply to your letter of February 7, 1991 concerning the tax treatment of certain prizes that will be received by students under the Canada Scholarship Program.

The Canada Scholarship Program is a program operated by the Department of Industry, Science, and Technology Canada.  Under this program, a minimum of 2500 scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding students (Scholars) entering their first year of undergraduate studies in natural sciences and engineering at Canadian universities.  These scholarships are renewable, with the attainment of a first-class standing, for a maximum of three additional years.
