Question 11
Tax shelters
Reassessments issued to individuals who invested in tax shelters can come several years after the initial assessment, involving substantial interest charges. How does Revenue Canada plan to manage this tax-shelter issue in the future?
Answer by the Department of Revenue
To maintain the integrity of the tax system, the Department attempts to examine tax shelters as soon as possible. The Department scrutinizes information returns and income-tax returns in order to select files that must be audited. Our goal is to begin our audits within a year after these returns are filed.
