Dear XXXXXXXXXX:
I am writing in response to your letter of September 29, 1994, wherein you requested the Department's assistance in contacting the individuals and groups that submitted written representations concerning the guidelines we developed regarding the application of the tax exemption provided by section 87 of the Indian Act.
The information provided to the Department by the above-mentioned individuals and groups was to be used only for tax purposes. The Department is very circumspect about using any such information, including the taxpayers' identification and addresses, for other purposes, such as, to send material to the taxpayers from third parties. Thus far, the Department has disclosed such information only where there were compelling humanitarian reasons for doing so. In the circumstances, I cannot accede to your request.
While I regret that I cannot grant your request, I trust that I have explained the Department's position on this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Denis Lefebvre
