Dear XXXXXXXXXX:
I am replying to your letter of August 25, 1993, addressed to the Honourable Garth Turner, former Minister of National Revenue, concerning processing of refunds requested as a result of the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in the Williams case. I apologize for the delay in responding.
As you are aware the Government put a remission order in place to allow this Department to refund federal taxes paid on now tax-exempt Unemployment Insurance Benefits. The processing of requested adjustments was delayed for several months while we awaited the passing of parallel orders by the provinces. An order was passed by the Province of Ontario on August 19, 1993, and adjustments are being processed. In addition, we have commenced federal adjustments where provincial orders have been delayed. Our district taxation offices can provide individuals with information on their respective cases.
I trust that this information will be useful to you.
Yours sincerely,
Denis Lefebvre Assistant Deputy Minister Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Branch A.M. Brake 957-2133 January 14, 1994 4-932720.MB
